Sandra Ann Chisholm MacLean Aitken Graduate Award

I am humbled to accept this graduate award from the Aitken family.

Update to practice title

Effective December 1st, 2021, I am officially on a leave of absence from ABCFP and so, I am no longer entitled to practice professional forestry in BC. This LOA will allow me to focus on my studies, while still remaining connected with ABCFP until I am ready to reinstate in the future.

Building Futures Scholarship

A warm thank you to Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. for their support. This is the 4th time I am receiving a CNRL Building Futures Scholarship.

COFI Forestry Scholarship

The Council of BC Forest Industries is a forestry advocacy working with government, First Nations, communities, and industry across the province. Thank you COFI for your support!

Dean's Award for Indigenous Grad Students

It is with extreme gratitude that I announce receiving a Dean's Award for Indigenous Grad Students from the University of Victoria. These awards are based on GPA and reference letters.

NSERC Indigenous Student Ambassador Award

It is my pleasure to announce I have received a NISA (NSERC Indigenous Student Ambassador Award). This funding will be used to travel to the Gwich'in Settlement Area in February 2022 (covid depending of course) and host a variety of community events including community engagement sessions for the divii project and events in the schools to get connected with youth. My team is thrilled to have secured this funding and I am excited to begin the event planning process!

Flights are booked!

After months of planning, budget changes, and COVID-19 re-planning, my flights are finally booked to be in Inuvik, NT from August 1st - 23rd, 2021. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to get involved in the community and develop a connection with the land in my study area. We are also planning a day of aerial surveys in the Northern Richardson Mountains while I am up so stay tuned for lots of content coming soon! In the meantime, please enjoy this capture of some nursey Dall's sheep from one of our camera traps (credit: Gwich'in Renewable Resources Board).

Celebrating Women in Forestry

Forestry Friendly Communities (FFC) featured six women in forestry as part of the 2021 commemoration of International Women's Day. I feel strongly that it is important to advocate for women, transgender, and non-binary folks in our industry, so I was thrilled to participate in this initiative.

Registration Update

As of February 2021, I have officially earned my Registered Professional Forester designation from the Association of BC Forest Professionals. I'd like to thank all the RPF/RFTs that I have worked with over the years for passing on their wisdom, knowledge, and unconditional support!

I am thrilled to finally announce I will be starting my Masters Degree in the School of Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria, May 2021! Supervised by Dr. Jason Fisher of the Applied Conservation & Macro Ecology (ACME) Lab and Dr. Trevor Lantz of the Arctic Landscape Ecology Lab, I will be working in partnership with the Gwich'in Renewable Resource Board, studying Divii (Dall's Sheep) in the Northern Richardson Mountains, NT.

Be sure to check out the lab websites for more information.
